Fire - Graceling Series (specifically the book title 'Fire')

[personal profile] thelastmonster 2013-12-07 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
Well didn't this just have Fire's temper raised to a level that matched her hair. A keen feat to pull from her, her emotions rarely burned this hot. But kidnap, given her history, had a way of doing that to her. Kidnapped (for a royal marriage she did not consent to), her bow taken from her, and encased under the sea! Didn't they know fire and water did not mix? It didn't matter that somehow the technology of this place, far out shining that the Dells, was keeping the impossible back - who could keep back the ocean? Like taming fire.

Outwardly she was calm and collected, if her movements a bit swift and directed as she headed towards the administration offices. Surely that's where she could go to rectify this egregious mistake. She did not care to see the marvels of this city, she wanted to go home - to the prince whom she did love, not waiting for this Tristan to choose.

[OOC: Okay, so Fire has some interesting abilities and qualities to her. She is telepathic and empathic and strong enough to control the thoughts and actions of others and even change their memories - BUT she only takes over a mind in self defense.

Which leads to the second uniqueness about her - she's a 'monster' in her fandom, a brief explanation HERE. But one of the problems of being a monster is that they tend to negatively affect the weak minded without any effort on the monster's part (like, vinegar and baking soda, except Fire tries to avoid those who would react strongly to her). If your character is weak minded, she will drive them to either lust uncontrollably for her (like of the sexual assault variety) or rage at her (violent physical assault) - both bad for Fire.

So, okay, I know this is an odd request - but I ask that only characters with strong emotional control and mental fortifications (like the kind the characters teach each other to keep the Nysgods out) interact with her for just this test drive. It's just make things not so complicated right now.

The darkside rippled with strength enough to stop Maul from doing whatever it was he was preoccupied with immediately. He knew that eventually the Nysgod would continue to pull in more and more dynamic candidates that they simply would not be capable of controlling.

Maul stalks quickly, moving between those that pass him in their hustle and bustle to the source of this ire. He sees her, steps away, engulfed in her direction and current purpose. A grin tugs itself up over his lips.

Yes, this will be good.

Fire could always tell when she’d drawn the attention of an individual. She could tell when she was meters away, across the camp of one of the King’s army, the other side of the palace. They became distinct, then, from the milling throng, in their focus on her. Like the torch signal stations up along the border of Dell and Pikkia in the mountains called the Little Grays. A beacon to her cognitive senses.

But this individual was wholly different.

Absent was the enraged frenzy of desire and hatred compelling the individual forward that had always before accompanied those random individuals seeking her out. Instead, in place of uncontrollable emotion was a startlingly disciplined mind.

She could count on her hand with the two missing fingers the number of individuals she’s encountered with this level of control. Because there were only three. Brigan, her lover; Brocker, Brigan’s biological father, and Fire’s mentor; and that boy named Leck who was not a monster but a deplorable human being who used his mental powers to destroy and harm every living thing in his path.

This kind of mental control took dedication to achieve, and that impresses Fire. Though, this alone does not prompt her to drop her guard. A disciplined mind did not signify moral standing, as she had learned with Leck.

She turned to face the individual pursuing her; she’d learned long ago ignoring them was never an option.

And was stunned to silence at the face that met her.

Her green eyes went wide – she couldn’t help it. She tried to categorize what she was seeing, like something out of a dream, two monsters of different species combined into one. One more human-like in stature, but with … horns. His black and red skin could have indicated a monster – as all monsters were known for their unique coloring. But the horns, the crux of Fire’s wonderment, told her this person could not be labeled the same as her.

“Who are you?” She’d had enough education to leave the ‘what’ alone for now.

If there was anything that she could infer from his mind, if there was anything that she could feel, it would have been interest. She speaks power and he feels her draw that he could easily see her power affecting many other minds around them. An allure, he'd say? It reminds him of some other species and their natural ability to pull a mind or emotion this way or that.

Although he knows that she is different from that. It is not a kind of thing he had felt before and so he is intrigued; and so the darkside is intrigued. He takes his steps forward almost a bit amused when observing her clear surprise. Yellow eyes look over her as an attempt to decipher what it was that he felt of her presence.

"Are you sure that's what you really want to ask?" He stops a distance away with the marking of a slight grin over his lips. Hands fold in front of his body, relaxed.

By all means he thinks be abrasive.

And with that this man revealed he could read her just like she could read him. Perhaps they were different sources to their abilities. Leck had called himself a Graceling, and had said his side of the mountains dividing the Dells from the western half of the continent did not have monsters, the only oddity were Gracelings. And she and Leck, while both possessing powers similar in nature, were far different from each other.

But this man had two golden colored eyes, not the different shades Leck had told her all Gracelings possessed.

His voice was odd, a unique accent that was unlike any dialect in the Dells or in Pikkia. And he didn’t sound like Leck. Someone from somewhere far different. She reached up with her left hand and fingered the… earpiece, the two individuals who had welcomed her had called it. They’d said it would help her communicate. If she had it in. Apparently, it worked.

“I believe wants should not overset propriety unless absolutely necessary,” she answered. “But if you know what I want, and are amiable to tell me, then we can skip my asking. But I still want to know who you are, as well.”

It was not her species that he was particularly interested in. She looked human and yet he knew that she was not. She was neither Jedi nor Sith; she was neither Lightside nor Darkside. She had a presence but it felt different from a Force user. She spoke with a calmness, not arrogance. There was confirmation that she was not trying to be anything more or less than what she was, he felt.

Someone simply and truly themselves.

"The trouble with power, I think, is that it is vibrant and loud." Unless measures are taken to conceal it. This was not something Maul enjoyed doing but he had long since come accustomed to the need for it.

"I am Maul," he introduces. "I am an Iridonian and a Sith. I can guess that these hold no meaning to you?"

The longer he is away from his Master the more he leans toward the former as an identity than the latter. Although such a shift may very well not be conscious.

Maul? Was that like Fire for her, perhaps? A name given for a superficial characteristic? Or was there something more to it? He did radiate confidence and he had an edge to him, Fire could not outline it fully yet, but it was there. It did make her wary as one should of a stranger.

She held her name in reserve for the time being.

She tossed the words ‘Iridonian’ and ‘Sith’ around her mind. They did, indeed, sound foreign to her, and as the device in her ear did not translate them to something corresponding in Dellian, Fire assumed they must be from Maul’s language.

She shook her head and determined to ask. He did seem quite willing to talk to her about himself, she could feel he carried some sort of pride for this identity, and for her inability to understand him fully she was apologetic. “I’m sorry, I have no understanding of those other words. What do they mean?”

He did not know, honestly. He remembers the names of his so called brothers being quite similar to him. Savage and Feral. Perhaps their family was noted for such characteristics. Whatever the reason behind his naming, it hardly mattered.

She does not offer her name back to him or introduce herself at all. Normally he would not care, frankly. Most people he comes to cross do not pique his interest quite enough for him to even consider them individual enough for a name. She was an exception, and so: "Have you no name?"

The ridge where brows would normally be rises just a touch.

"Iridonian is a people; Sith is a philosophy," well, technically it was also a people but those people were long gone and their ideals carried on. There was much more politics to that matter of the old days but he knew it not.

Fire couldn’t explain why she was hesitant to give this man her name, she just suddenly felt caution was the key, and she’d long since learned listening to her gut paid off. But now that he asked, she couldn’t see a reason not to tell him. “I’m named Fire.”

Despite her hesitancy, his explanations interest her, she liked politics and history even when presented in dry manuscripts that could put even the most studious scholars to sleep. “Where are the Iridonian from? And I’ve never heard of the Sith philosophy.”

"Uhura?"

Spock had just a glimpse of the women before she turned the corner, and he followed. The red hair didn't fit, but her face. Her face was so similar to Uhura's that Spock was willing to believe that he'd imagined it.

But maybe. Maybe the Grasp had taken her here.

All the fun!

Her infernal hair had slipped free of her head scarf again, as it was wont to do as if it had a mind of its own. A wild, uncaring for the vessel that grew and transported it mind. She stopped and quickly, hoping not to draw more attention to herself, undid the scarf, tucked the offending locks of burgundy and russet and deep red back into submission and retied the scarf.

At that moment she became aware that she had, in fact, caught someone's attention. She braced herself, reaching out to assess the caliber of person drawing closer.

And was surprised to find not uncontrollable rage, and not uncontrollable lust, but a strong mind with feelings soundly walled off from her reading. It reminded her much of Brigan, the man she loved back home, but there was something so profoundly different. She got the sense there so much more but it was all so well concealed from her.

It impressed her to encounter someone so disciplined and well organized.

She turned to address the person following her, and stopped at the sight of him. He appeared mostly human, but for the peculiar way his ears were unmistakably pointy.

She blinked, realizing her shock must have registered on her face. "Forgive me. You wanted something from me? How can I help you?"

When she stopped and turned to address him, Spock studied her eyes, searching for any sign of recognition. What he found instead was shock.

When the woman spoke, it was Uhura's voice.

"Nyota?" he repeated. But he could already see. There was no recognition.

"I believe it was my mistake." The disappointment was there, but didn't register in his voice, or on his face. "I mistook you for someone I know."

Fire was taken aback by the man’s admissions more than she was with his face. He had given her something no one ever else had. Never before had she ever been mistaken for someone else. Everyone always knew precisely who she was, thanks to the generations of monsters that had come before her, and the legacy of her cruel father. Because of this, her reputation always preceded her. Anonymity was not a luxury she could own.

She let the feeling bounce around her mind, let it sink in. She caught herself smiling at the experience and quickly reined herself back in. Clearly this man had expected to see someone else, and disappointment was surely following the realization she wasn’t that person.

This man’s voice was accented in a way she wasn’t familiar, he was clearly not from The Dells.

“I am sorry I am not the person you were expecting,” she said, trying to smooth over this misunderstanding. “I am called Fire. I’ve just arrived here. Are you like me, one of the candidates? Or are you one of the Nysgods?”

"It is illogical to apologize Fire, as you cannot be at fault for my misinterpretations."

Spock's words were spoken in unwavering monotone. But it lacked any tones of condescension. It was simply how he spoke.

"You may call me Spock. And yes, I am also one of the candidates."

It was hard for him not to stare at her, even more than what's expected in the course of a normal conversation. Every movement resembled Uhura.

“I just meant it as an expression of sympathy,” Fire said with a small smile, his brusk tone did not make her pause, she felt no condescension from him. “You must have wanted to see a familiar face from home.” She knew she would like to see someone from home. “Though, I suppose that would mean they are in the same predicament, and that might not be much better.”

Spock was an interesting name, but didn’t translate as anything in Dellian. A unique name to this man’s culture.

“Have you been here long?” Knowing the duration of her stay might be beneficial.

He nodded at her words. As much as Spock missed Kirk and Uhura (though he'd never tell them so), the Vulcan did not wish for either of them to be trapped here.

"Nearly two months." But he caught on to why she asked. "However, other candidates have told me that they have been here for months, or years."
