abyss_also_gazed: (I fail to see how that's my problem.)

Me too!

((btw, if I don't tag back tomorrow, the ice storm has taken out the power))

Your parents were science fiction fans, I take it?

[She doesn't think anything of it just yet - after all, unusual, strange, and absurd pseudonyms and codenames are just par for the course in her line of work. Her boyfriend had, for the moment, won the stupid Containment Team handle contest - which was a real thing, meant to help discredit any leaked Foundation records - by naming the one he headed up Whimsical.]

[OOC: Aww! Be safe!!]

One might say my father was, but that is not why I was named that. Helena Georgia does not have the ring to it that H.G. Wells does. Besides, it was my brother's way of giving me credit for my work when the entire world believed he was H.G. Wells.

[She scoffed and sipped her scotch.]

((Sorry for not getting back to this sooner! Things have been completely nuts here this week.))

[It takes a few seconds for the information to click; it has quite a bit of alcohol to filter its way through, after all.]

So you're the H. G. Wells, then. That is excellent. It's an honor to meet you.
feellikeibelong: (056 - I am quite confident)

[personal profile] feellikeibelong 2013-12-16 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
[OOC: It's totally fine, it's that time of year! I've also caught the plague, so I've been on the slower side of things the past couple days.]

I am, yes. It is a pleasure to meet you. [Helena smiled that thousand-watt pride-tinged smile of hers.]

Might I inquire as to what you are a doctor of?
abyss_also_gazed: (Fuckin' A.)

[personal profile] abyss_also_gazed 2013-12-19 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Only if I might say that The Time Machine has been one of my favorite stories ever since I was a little girl.

[While her grilled cheese sandwich still hasn't materialized, another drink has; fortunately, she's decided to sip this one, or else it probably wouldn't have been long before she was trying to find something for Wells to autograph.]

My doctorates are in biology and particle physics. Which actually is not as much of a leap as it sounds like - my dissertation in the former was on the mathematical modeling of swarm intelligence. It hasn't aged as well as I would've liked.
feellikeibelong: (034 - Slightly puzzled)

[personal profile] feellikeibelong 2013-12-20 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
[And that smile turned into a grin.] Thank you very much.

Swarm intelligence? Intriguing. How has it not held up? [Helena was more than interested in talking science. She, too, received another drink to nurse along.]
abyss_also_gazed: labcoat (It's still twitching. How interesting.)

((OOC: Sorry for vanishing off the face of the earth! I had the move from hell to contend with. @_@ Would you be interested in continuing this thread?))

[OOC: Awww it's alright! I'm definitely still interested in continuing it!]
abyss_also_gazed: (What if we vivisection it?)

[personal profile] abyss_also_gazed 2014-01-11 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's like this - not only is the hardware we have for performing complex mathematical calculations significantly more advanced in my time than it is in yours, but the number of calculations per minute that the hardware within any given cost bracket can perform roughly doubles every two years. So, in the fifteen years since I finished said dissertation, it's become about a hundred and eighty times easier to use all the messy, awful - and, ultimately, more accurate on finer scales - systems of modeling that I had to reject at the time.
feellikeibelong: (007 - Watching/uncertain)

[personal profile] feellikeibelong 2014-01-11 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
[For the moment, Helena would leave out the fact she'd "time traveled" to the future and was aware of the advancements in technology.]

So no doubt you've had to remodel your original hypothesis and subject your data to more testing as technology itself advances. In the time that has elapsed between your dissertation and the present moment, what elements of your work have stood up? [She had, of course, followed the description perfectly. Helena was not only science-oriented, but she was a genius and could follow such discussion quite easily.]
abyss_also_gazed: (Let's begin the dissection.)

[personal profile] abyss_also_gazed 2014-01-12 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well, utilization of living space over time in homeostasis isn't terribly complex to model, so that part has not seen any major challenges. However, the only part I've had occasion to continue working with is collective response to extreme stress, as that's the only part that's really pertinent to my work now.

[She unconsciously fidgets just slightly with her prosthetic.]

I suppose there's no harm in anyone here knowing what I do. I design and implement containment and experimentation protocols for entities and objects which don't belong in my universe, but have ended up there anyway.

[Which is why she's one of the few people who actually prefers being here - she knows what it means, that things that don't belong in her reality keep finding a way in anyhow. It means it's only a matter of time before the world ends, and that's one party she doesn't want to be around for.]
feellikeibelong: (001 - Working)

[personal profile] feellikeibelong 2014-01-12 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
I must say, you are quite brilliant. Your work sounds positively fascinating to me. Then again, I always do enjoy learning about new aspects of science I have no prior knowledge of.

[She had noticed the prosthetic, but she hadn't paid it much attention. She wasn't exactly the type to stare in such a fashion. Staring was rude, after all.]

Dangerous entities and objects, I would assume. You have my sympathies for your world having to endure such a fate. Has your work been successful in containing these foreign entities and objects?

[In a way, it sounds a bit like the Warehouse and Artifacts.]
