Sarah's brow furrows as she listens to Ruby's story, trying to put together the pieces and make them make sense. She knows that there are any number of cryptids that could mess with people's memories - she herself, being one of them - but in Nysgod territory?

Something doesn't sound right.

"I'm sorry," she frowns. "That sounds like it must be really stressful to not remember."

"Stressful, yeah. And terrifying, frustrating, completely unfair." There's a moment where Ruby lets a frown slip through. This isn't something she can just brush aside like it's nothing, but she sure does try, thinking if she focuses on other things that it'll quiet the constant questions she has about what exactly happened to her.

"That's why I'm glad to see since I've been back that the group's grown much closer."

"Close is good," she nods. Especially in situations like this. It means that people are accounted for, in good times and bad. "I just wish that the close was ... with the people I'm used to being close to. Coming here is a bit like starting over."

"I know. I feel the same way. Though I guess I had a bit of an advantage, since we were all new when I arrived, even though we weren't from the same place." And that is why she tries to help as much as she can since people can easily feel alone here.

"But you're okay with making new friends, I hope?"

"Yeah." Sort of. Kind of. If she lets her powers take over she can be really good at it, but those aren't the kind of friends she wants to make. She wants to make real friends, but she's never been all that good at that.

"I'll figure it out."

"It shouldn't be too challenging." From what Ruby's seen, they're eager as a group to welcome newbies and become friends. "And if you ever need anything, I'd be happy to help you out."

Sarah smiles a bit at that. Someone willing to help she hasn't whammied into it is always welcome. It's hard to tell who's naturally helpful and who isn't with her sometimes, but this woman seems like the natural type.

"Thanks. I have a feeling I'll need it."

"No problem." She smiles brightly and then takes a gander around them. "So! Finding any good books in here?"

At the switch to something nerdy, she brightens. Talking about academics is one of the few things that actually makes her feel like a normal girl.

"Just trying to keep up with my classes." She gestures to the books of advanced calculus and other areas in front of her. "I ... really like math."

"Wow, that's... wow." Ruby look suitably impressed. "I can add and subtract. That's about it." She knows enough to handle money and keep up with the books at the diner, but that's about as far as it goes.

"Adding and subtracting is a step up on my cousin." That's unfair, Verity could manage simple math. "Kidding. But she still makes me do all of her accounts for her, but I don't mind. Numbers are sort of my thing."

"Well there's always a need for people who can do math and especially those who enjoy it, to make up for those of us who don't. Are you in high school? Or is this college stuff?" Ruby's a bit blurry on all that stuff since it was shoved into her consciousness as part of a curse.

"College. I mostly audit. My family couldn't really afford to send me full time." And most of the teachers would have forgotten she was there anyway. There wasn't really a point to trying to actively participate, and at the same time she still got to learn.

It was a win-win and no one got hurt.

"I wanted to go to college," she reveals. And it's true. Before the curse broke she wanted to get out of Maine and travel. She wanted to go to school in Boston, visit New York, visit everywhere. Once she realized who she was, though, all she wanted was to go home before the outside world discovered them and found out what she was.

"But my Granny got sick, so I stayed home. And once she was better she wanted me to learn how to run her diner so I could take over when she retires."

"A diner?" she raises her eyebrows in a curious gesture. The thing she likes the most about diners is the endless supply of ketchup, but that's not really something that matters to this conversation. "Do you cook?"

"I do. I'm best at pancakes and burgers, but I can do a lot of stuff."

One of the things the curse actually made her grateful for was the modern cooking techniques that she instantly knew. Microwaves and stoves always trump cooking in a big, cast iron pot over a fire.

"Hey, pancakes and burgers can make a lot of people happy. And both are not things I can make so you've got a leg up on me there."

This is mostly because she doesn't really eat them, but that's neither here nor there.

"Definitely! You should see people's faces when their maple syrup runs over their breakfast sausages. It's like, the one way sausages can get even better. That's why I plate them up beside the pancakes."

Yes, she's a connoisseur of diner food and how best to plate them.

"I have a cousin who would probably love that place," she says with a grin. "That sounds right up her alley." It doesn't necessarily stir her appetite, but Verity would probably eat her weight in the stuff.
