He snorted at the last bit. That was a possibility this whole debacle was Jim's idea of a prank.

"Like your idea of a prank, perhaps?"

He knew Jim was alive and well, he saw him breathe before he was whisked here to be a potential mate for a Nysgod prince. How a male could do that made his head hurt.

"Pretty safe to say the universe has it out for me." No. Even they wouldn't play this sort of prank. Or Jane wouldn't. Not by bringing them to this place. "You two just got lucky enough to be dragged along for the ride."

She closed her eyes for a moment and when she opened them she was smiling again.

And that's when she pounced. Slow-motion and deliberate with every step screaming she was about to go in for a hug and he better dodge the hell out of the way now if he wasn't going to accept it.

"You can't even begin to believe how fucking happy I am you're here."

His mama and daddy taught him to never let a lady who threw herself at him fall, so despite the rather sudden display of intimacy, McCoy opened his arms to catch his Captain, despite the fact she was definitely female and not his Jim.

"Really. Even though I'm not your Bones?"

"Doesn't matter." Jane had gotten the same argument from Spock and he had received the same response. She didn't give two shits about his gender or that he wasn't from her universe. His fundamental self was all Bones. Maybe he had a few different experiences, maybe he had some different ticks or concerns but the portion of him that ultimately shaped him was something she knew and understands.

"Same core. That's good enough."

It was good enough for Jane to draw every inch of strength and comfort from him and for him to clearly be accepting of Jane seeking it.

"You'll have to forgive me if I am a little slow, then? It appears that I have a new charge while I'm here."

His arms had automatically pulled her in close, still in shock at the fact that there was at least two Kirks from the same divergence point. And well, he did have a new Kirk to learn, to study. And to worry over. What was different, what was similar, what changed because of the fact this Kirk was female?

"Yeah. But look at it this way. I've been here on my own for two months and I haven't needed to be stabilized once."

At least not physically. Jane sagged in relief when he finally, finally started hugging her back. He could take all the time he needed so long as he didn't avoid her because she was a woman.
