Standing, he starts to pace, arms gesticulating vigorously. "2237? It feels like not ten minutes ago I was elbows deep in this kid's guts and you're telling me you're a nurse from space?? Well excuse me for not exactly taking your word for it. I'm from the humble year of 1952... everyone looks up at stars and says 'that's nice'. Space? If it seems like I'm freaking out it's because I am... I haven't had a drink in hours and I'm just supposed to deal with being magically sent to this nowhere place? I must be going insane..."
no subject
He's kind of reminding her of Dr McCoy, what with the yelling and needing a drink, and that just makes her miss her boss all the more.
"Eventually you'll have to deal with it, yes," she answers calmly, setting the kitten down in her lap. "The people here are from all different places and times. Some are used to interacting with the wider world, and some aren't. But we're all stuck here in the same situation as you're in now, so it might help if you talk to people and get to know them."
no subject
He's thankful she let him have his freak out, sometimes that's all he needs.
no subject
"Or, well, I've been a part of this whole thing a long time. We've only been here a few days, but I've lived in..." Her eyes lift in thought. "Four places before this one since this whole... kidnapping thing began."
She sighs and strokes her fingertips down the kitten's back. "I told you I'd have to ease you into the whole story. If the idea of space travel is unsettling, what's going on here isn't going to sound much better."

Hawk sits back down, flopping onto his back... watching the lights from the fireworks reflect on the water. "Just when I thought life couldn't get worse... then again, nothing is firing at me here... no blood... Maybe I'll think of it as a vacation."
He looks up at Christine. "But you're not telling me everything, are you. Bad stuff happens here too?"
no subject
Christine watches him watching the fireworks for a moment before looking back at the kitten, who's started to get up an explore her lap.
"It does. But maybe I should start at the beginning. Are you ready for one practically unbelievable tale?"
no subject
He appreciates her kindness, and it's obvious that she's done this for several other people. "You know Christine, for a nurse, you certainly have the compassionate part down."
no subject
"This world is called Niflheim and its inhabitants are the Nysgods. They're an immortal race that have a lot of... unique abilities. Powers, or magic I guess is all we can call it. They have a king who wants to step down and leave the throne to his son, Tristan, but the king wants Tristan to marry first."
She takes a breath and gives him a searching look. "Sounding ridiculous yet?"
no subject
Yeah, he's doing a lot better.
no subject
"Well, to continue, that's where we come in. Nysgods are all born male, and they're unique in that they can only love once, and they fall in love at first sight. It's literally encoded into them. Most times they go traveling outside their world to find their love and since they're immortal, they have plenty of time. But in Tristan's case, he stays here and a device called the Grasp was created to bring possible marriage partners to him. And seeing how you're from the mid-20th century, I'll just point out that, yes, they can fall in love with men too."
And here's another look as she waits to see if he's still following along.
no subject
"No... oh no, no no no no no. You're not telling me I was brought here to be some Prince's bride. I was wrong, this is worse than purgatory... I'm in Hell!"
He gets up again, pacing as he thinks this over. "And you're saying there's no way out? Am I not allowed to go home ever again? I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'd prefer going back to the war at this point. At least there it doesn't make sense. Here it's just unimaginable!"
Yeah, he's freaking out. Again.
no subject
"Potential bride. We've been here a long time and he hasn't picked any of us, and even if he did, we can say no. He doesn't want to marry anybody who doesn't want to marry him." There's far more to it than that, regarding prophecies and all that, but she's definitely holding off on those facts until another day.
"Besides, this place we are right now? We're cut off from the Nysgods here, so don't think you have to don a white dress just yet, okay? As for going home, sometimes people do disappear and end up back home, but we don't know how they manage it. It's all random."
no subject
"I've been working my ass off for two years in the scum hole of Korea just to land here....to what? To live with the prospect I might never see my dad again?"
Hawk breathes, trying to calm down... "Look, I'm not angry at you, and I'm sorry for yelling... but maybe a space nurse might be more fit to handle this than someone who has only seen a television set twice in his life."
no subject
"I understand. It's just that I've had time to adjust and try to make a life for myself until we all find a way back. Just because we haven't figured it out yet doesn't mean we never will."
