Well, first off, cats do hunt other things besides rats like small birds and apparently Alec, as the kitten seems to be determined to tackle him. It's failing miserably, but still trying. Alec sneezes. Damn allergies.

"Who do I pay fealty to... that's an interesting question with a lot of interesting answers. But for simplicity's sake, we shall go with the King and Queen of Twilight in the mist realms of the Fae." He figures that would make more sense than some answers he could give. Looking the wound over he summons a bit of water to wash it out.

"I don't charge or trade for helping people in need of it. I cause enough misery in people's lives. It gives me a small bit of pleasure to actually be allowed to help someone."

"Come off him, he doesn't want to be bothered," Door scolds, but she doesn't speak cat like she does rat or pigeon. Instead, she'll snatch it up with her good arm.

"The Queen in Queen's Park or Queensbury?" At least he didn't say the Shepherds.

"That's a sufficient enough trade, if it makes you happy." Definitely not London Below, or even above, for that matter.

The kitten looks miffed but doesn't do anything but hang there. Fortunately it's just an ordinary kitten and not the teleporting kind. Alec hates those.

"None of the above. I'm not from Earth." He starts to carefully wind the bandage around her arm. "I'm a world hopper."

Door has far too firm a grip on the kitten, that it has to accept its fate.

"Neither above or below? Who brought you here?" The rules of her own world say an opener has to allow someone such free movement.

Maybe the same person brought her here.

"More like from in between here and there and all the spaces between moments and ideas," he says. "And as for who brought me here? Now that's also a tricky question with far too many possible answers. Let me think of one that's not quite a lie."

One could easily say that Alec is an opener all by himself.

"There are beings that rule this place that fish all of reality looking for different kinds of people to marry their... I think prince, but I'm not one hundred percent sure. I'd have to double check. It might be king. In any case, they have snatched you up as a possible mate. And, I suppose me as well, since I am here. Though one could say I brought myself because there are little to know places closed to me and I came because I wanted to see what it was like. It's hard to say, really."

What an interesting ability. "Getting into the places that do not want to be found?" Door had always thought those a rumour. If only her father were alive to hear about it.

"You sound like the Marquis. Do you know him?" Carabas would love him.

Door only frowns at the description. London Below may have it's very old traditions, but kidnapping for betrothal? That's hardly ever done anymore.

"Oh sure. It's easier than people think it is," Alec says. "You just have to look for something that's not there, a break in the patterns, if you will."

He ties off the bandage neatly and then sneezes once again. "I've heard of him, but I can't say I've ever met him personally."

It is rather rude, though perhaps, time honored tradition?

What an ability to master. Door even manages to work up looking impressed followed but wondering if this kitten is meant for food. It wouldn't be the first -- or hundredth -- of her eating cat.

"The Marquis's reputation proceeds him," everywhere. "Do you know if he's here? I need to find him."

The kitten would prefer not to be eaten, thank you.

At the impressed look, Alec just shrugs.

"Not that I know of." He stands up and offers her a hand. "I'm sorry."

She wouldn't eat it raw, or while it was still alive! Door is not Mr. Vandermaar! For someone her size, she's often starving. It's something that can marvel those who are unfamiliar with her.

Taking the proffered hand, Door gets to her feet, albeit unsteadily. "Is this place somewhere safe?"

That's good! Though the kitten would still prefer not being eaten.

"Safe. In that no one is likely going to try and kill you, yes, I suppose so." He will help her steady as long as she needs it. He also sneezes. "You can call me Alec, if you'd like."

From what he knows about her world - and it's been a very long time since he's poked about there - it seemed like one of those worlds where giving your real name wasn't a good thing. You gave names that you wished to be called, even if they weren't the real ones.

The kitten is warm, and soft, and everything Door's not had today. As hungry as she is, she won't be considering a leg or breast tonight. The kitten though, will be perched on her shoulder, opposite to where the man is standing.

"I've already had an attempt on my life today," One that missed a main artery by that much.The rest of her family wasn't so lucky,

"I don't have anything to trade for that either, except my name." She would hold her hand out, to shake it, but one's covered in blood, and the other is covered in a cat fur, cradling the one covered in blood. "I'm Door, Lord Portico's eldest daughter."

"Those are always annoying. But at least it was only an attempt and it didn't actually succeed."

While he wouldn't mind the blood so much - he's seen plenty of blood in his time - he is grateful she didn't offer the kitten fur covered hand. His allergies are making him miserable enough as it is.

"A pleasure to meet you. I've heard of you and your family as well. But not much. Just by reputation."

"It was Mr. Vandermar who did this to me." If he knows of her father, he must've heard of Croup and Vandermar, and hopefully understand her desperation to find somewhere safe.

The rest of her family, not so fortunate.

"Is there anyone here who can take a message for me?"

Alec actually makes a disgusted face at the mention of Mr. Vandermar. Yes, he's heard of them. They ate a friend of his, at least a version of them ate a friend of his at another game.

He rocks on his heels for a moment. "I believe currently that no there isn't. But you're also safe, as far as I know. I don't believe this is a place that would tolerate the likes of Mr. Vandermar and his friend."

They do enjoy some odd dietary habits. Croup's love of ancient pottery is the strangest of all.

"No one tolerates them, because they don't need anyone to. They got into the House Without Doors. They can go wherever they like." Instead of wringing her hands, or anything equally as panicky, she reaches up to the kitten, something alive.

Reminds him a bit of Mr. Tulip... /Discworld references.

"Mm... I suppose so. But I think you'd be safe enough here. The people that brought you here want you alive. And I think if they can bring someone like yourself here, they could probably keep someone like them out." He honestly doesn't think that the whatevertheyares would appreciate someone trying to eat their consort potentials very much.

OH YAY SOMEONE'S PAYING ATTENTION TO ME!!! The kitten is happy to be petted and licks her fingers.

The kitten on her shoulder is not going to be turned over to DEATH no matter how much he CAPSLOCKS EVERYTHING. /Another reference.

"Intending on keeping people safe doesn't mean it will happen." And from here she can't find out the whys and whos is regards to the death of her family.

"Supper," she says, not bothering to explain she's decided to call the kitten that, and not a suggestion, as she lets the thing try and catch her fingers.

Death wouldn't take him anyway. /yet another reference.

"No. If that were true, there would be a lot fewer injured small children in the world." Smile?

Supper meeps at this.

Alec raises his eyebrows briefly. "Are you Naming the poor thing?" That's definitely a capital there.

Well, Supper's nothing so special as a tube worm. /One more for good measure.

"Fewer dead children," briefly, she pauses, looking inward only to find a gaping hole, where a once solid Door would be.

Having a practical question to answer is easier. "I don't speak cat, so Supper will have to do and so Supper's true name can stay hidden."

Alec sticks his hands into his pockets and rocks on his heels briefly.

"I know someone who can speak cat. He's got a teleporting cat familiar." There's a sniffle and a sneeze. "I never bothered to learn to speak cat. And even if you knew cat, I doubt he'd tell you."

"Learning rat is much more useful," Door has to agree with that much. Who bothers learning the language of a major source of food. "I was lucky to have an aptitude for it."

The sneeze has her stepping a little back. "And if Supper wants to give a true name, that's fine but I won't force it." Even with Carabas, not his name, Door won't push.
