No, we do! It's just ... never been a requirement that they have to marry to take the throne. At least, not for the guys anyway.

[Still, Queen Elizabeth never married. And she was a pretty impressive queen.]

It's encouraged, because they're going to need an heir, but not mandatory.

I do not know what this word, "mandatory," means. But here, there must be an heir.

Mandatory means it's required. It has to happen.

[there's a pause as she considers this because sure, needing a heir (while totally unfair) makes sense for all the female candidates, but ... ]

What if he chooses a guy? Not that I'm judging or anything, but I'm pretty sure guys from my universe don't work that way.

Nysgods do. And in order to be Tristan's mate, whoever he picks must become a Nysgod.

If he does not get his first choice, he will be forced to settle for a second or third.

Because that is how they mate. Each Nysgod, when he comes of age, goes out into the world to find a mortal to bring back with him.

Tristan cannot go out into the world, so the world is coming to him.
