He could only stand where he was, staring at Elena from across the room. He'd been shown to the candidate house and had belligerently taken his time getting there. If he'd known who was here, he might not have stopped off for drinks for the last few hours. Maybe half the day. Who was counting? Yet, there she was, sitting and looking far too comfortable for the situation they were in. "Elena?"
He had to ask. Maybe it was Katherine, after all. And wouldn't that be the universe kicking him in the balls.

For all she knows, this is some kind of dream she concocted for herself while she's drowning, and eventually it's all just going to fade away.
Then she hears his voice.
She turns in an instant, eyes locking on his face instantly, and she isn't entirely sure how to react. There's a brief moment of confusion as she stands, watching his face for a long time before she finally speaks.
"Damon?"
no subject
He stands in front of her, looking down at her before he carefully reaches out to rest his hands on her shoulders. Part of him is expecting her to fade away when he does, pop like some dream bubble to show this was all in his head. Some hallucination brought on by the beings that brought him here.
There's a moment of startled confusion on his own end when she doesn't evaporate. When she stays solid and there and real as he touches her. As if he could doubt it. Not with her scent there, as familiar to him as his own. He moves to wind his arms around her, pulling her into a hug. "What the hell are you doing here?"
no subject
Then he pulls her into a hug and she goes to it without thinking, wrapping her arms around his shoulders and leaning into him. There's something about him being here that lightens here, just a little. It means she hasn't left everyone behind.
"I've been here for a couple weeks. They ... they picked me as a candidate. For the prince."
no subject
He had to, now. For her, if not for himself. "Are you okay? They didn't hurt you or anything, did they?" For their sake, the answer better be no. She didn't look hurt.
no subject
"The Grasp is broken, Damon. I don't think we have a choice."
no subject
"Their little grabby hands toy doesn't get to say how long we stay here."
no subject
She doesn't mean to be snippy, but she doesn't necessarily want to go home to her death either. She crosses her arms in front of her chest as she steps away from him.
"Would it really be such a bad thing to stay? It could be a break. A break from ... everything."
no subject
"I didn't take you as the running away sort, Elena. I thought you'd want to find the cure as much as Stefan does." If only to cram it down her throat so he could have her back and get her away from Damon. "My idea of a break doesn't involve being kidnapped and subject to a possible shotgun wedding."
no subject
Then what he said next confused her. She turned to face him again. "Cure? What cure?"

"I'm a vampire?"
The thought alone makes her chest tighten, and she tries not to panic, regardless of the fact that it's the last thing she ever wanted to be.
no subject
He was back in front of her quickly, gripping her arms and looking down at her. "You're human again. How did they do it?" Along with the surprise and disbelief, there was a thread of fear. Human, she'd probably prefer Stefan again, making him lose what he felt he'd just gotten.
no subject
"They didn't do anything." She says quietly, not quite looking at him as she speaks. "Matt and I both arrived here shortly after his truck went over the bridge." She always knew she wasn't making it out of that car alive, but she didn't think it would turn into something like this.
no subject
"Of course the human puppy would follow you here. Color me so not surprised." He didn't take a step back, but he didn't move forward again. "You haven't missed much." It was probably best if he didn't fill her in on some of the things that had happened recently.
no subject
"It sounds like I've missed a lot."
no subject
"Just the usual Mystic Falls chicanery. What about here? How long have you been here?"
no subject

"The other candidates are nice."

Maybe it hurt so much because he'd already had her. She was, as far as he was concerned, his. And yet here she was in front of him again, human, and clearly not his. The universe hated him. "Why haven't we met him? Shouldn't he be the one to greet everyone and give them a yes or no sticker?"
