He shrugged it off, not wanting to make a big deal of it or go into any long, meaningful conversations. He was too busy trying to fully accept he was apparently stuck here and he was stuck here with Elena. It might be worthwhile if they'd thrown in some kind of beach getaway with white sands and drinks with umbrellas.

"Just the usual Mystic Falls chicanery. What about here? How long have you been here?"

"Just a few weeks. Matt got here a week after I did." But from the same point in time, which yes, was very weird, but she had moved past that at this point.

"And what do you make of all this," he asked, gesturing around them to indicate not just the house, but the whole wonderful kidnapping adventure as well.

She shrugs. "I haven't met the prince yet, so I can't really say anything there." She starts loosening up a bit as they talk about something else. She'll have to fully digest the idea of her being a vampire later.

"The other candidates are nice."

"Right. Nice. I'm sure they're just peachy." Damon's trust in anyone he hadn't personally met and judged was nonexistent. He moves to sit, looking around the room in disdain. He bet they didn't even have anything good to drink here. "Do you plan on falling for Charming if he smiles your way?"

She flashes him a look. "I'm not planning on doing anything. I haven't even met him yet."

He gave her a short smile, trying not to let the burn of jealousy show. First Stefan and now this prince character. Wonderful.

Maybe it hurt so much because he'd already had her. She was, as far as he was concerned, his. And yet here she was in front of him again, human, and clearly not his. The universe hated him. "Why haven't we met him? Shouldn't he be the one to greet everyone and give them a yes or no sticker?"

"I don't know. Some of the candidates have -- I've talked to them -- but they also mentioned living in another city, Dagaz. They can't live there right now because of the meteors."

Her face turns up a bit on the end because she didn't experience the meteors for herself. She's just heard they're there.

"Mmhmm. Meteors. What the hell is this, some kind of sci-fi video game?" Someone was not impressed, even less so that he'd managed to be snagged by these people. Damon emphatically hated being caged, even if the cage was an entire city. He was even more pissed that Elena was here and up as a 'potential mate'. Over his already dead body.

She shrugs. She's stopped trying to figure it out, mostly because she's never really gotten very far. "Can you really say it's the weirdest thing we've been through?"

He gave her a look that was full of every bit of sarcasm he could lace it with. "Interdimensional kidnapping? Yeah, I have to say this tops it on the weird scale."

"Maybe." Or maybe she was just a little more accepting of things because she's -- or at least she thought she was dead. "At least no one's trying to kill us."

Yet.

"Just wait. It'll happen." The surety of that statement was just Damon being Damon - and mostly because he seemed to bring that out in people.

And he gets another look. "Gee, you're optimistic."

[dickwithfangs]

"I'm a realist. It's kept me alive this long." He wriggled his butt in the seat he was in, trying to find the lump that was poking him. "You can't be that naive anymore, Elena."

"I'm not. I'm just trying not to think about it." She sighs as she flops down on the couch next to him. "Besides. I'm already dead anyway."

"No, you're not." He gave her a firm look. "You know, vampire Elena was way more fun. You were getting used to it. Even finding things about it you liked." He smiled as he remembered the college party. Oh yes, much fun.

[braveandstupid]

She glares at him. "I don't want to get used to it. I don't want to be that. I never did." Sense how Elena is preparing to dig in her heels about never going home.

But first things first.

"What about Matt? Is he ... ?"

[dickwithfangs]

"No, you didn't. But it happened and you were dealing with it."

He finally got up, turning the cushion over before sitting back down. There. Better. "Yes, your little pet is fine. Stefan got him out first, which is how the whole situation got twisted around in the first place."

Lucky for Matt that Stefan was the one there. If it had been Damon, Elena would have been pulled out first, even if he had to drag her kicking and screaming up to the surface.

She exhales slowly, nodding a bit as she leaned back against the couch. "Good. That's good."

No matter how much they try to beat it out of her, Elena is always going to be a martyr. And if she has to be a vampire, there might as well be something good out of it.

"Uh huh. It's just peachy."

He looked around the room, puffing out his cheeks as he let out a breath. "So what is there to do around here?"

"Get a job? Talk to people?" She shrugs. "There are plenty of bars."

"You mean they expect me to work? That's crap. I didn't have to back home, why should I give up my wonderfully philanthropic status from there just to roll around in filth here?"

"Because you have no money to be philanthropic with?"

[dickwithfangs]

"Which is crap. If they were going to take me, they should have taken a few other things as well. Or at least set me up in a similar position." No, he was not sulking.
