[ When Mia spots the dead body, she doesn't seem that surprised or upset. Mostly, the look on her face is confused. Carefully, she approaches the corpse and pokes it in the shoulder gingerly. When the body doesn't react, she frowns a little and shakes it a bit ]

Um, excuse me, please wake up. I don't think we're supposed to sleep here.

[ And now Elijah is wondering if this chick that just walked in is for real. He didn't think much of it when she started poking at the corpse. But then she started asking it to wake up. Seriously, can't that girl tell that the guy is dead?

Better break it to her gently, then. ]

I don't think he's going to wake up.

[bioluminesce]

[ she jumps at that and looks up at elijah, surprised. had she not seen him there? probably. she glances back down at the body before answering ]

But you always wake up after you fall asleep. Why won't he?

Gretchen whips around; it takes a real, active effort not to leap immediately to violence. As it is, she takes a half-step towards Myfanwy, her hands curling into fists.

"No," she snaps. Her voice sounds a little rough around the edges, like she's gone hoarse or something. "I'm not. I just... goddamnit." She snarls, turning away from the door and slamming her fist through the wall. There's an audible popping noise as something in her hand breaks.

[guardiansteel]

[ Elijah wouldn't be surprised if she hadn't seen him. He was kind of standing off to the side, and he had been pretty quiet. ]

Because he's not asleep.

[Spike stares up at her, incredulous.]

Been stabbed, haven't I? Sorry to intrude.

[idolstolemylook]

[Spike glares at him.]

Why is that everyone's first assumption? Oh, look, vampire and a dead body. I must've killed 'im.

Spike stares at her. He shakes his head--no, he's not usually this bloody quiet. But then he's not sure what to do. Because what exactly is she supposed to do? He shrugs his shoulders, and then realizes he's probably wasting his time. He should go find one of the girls. Or at least a pad of paper.

"Oh, come on, I can't just leave you like this, especially..." Wait. Gretchen breaks off mid-sentence, looking around. She had been too distraught to pay attention earlier, but now that she's calmed down a little, there's definitely something distinctly Not Human around, and it's close. Which makes sense, all things considered -- she's no biologist, but she's pretty sure most natural causes don't render people literally incapable of making any sounds.

Which she really probably shouldn't tell this guy. It's a bad idea for so very many reasons, and will probably lead to more bad things down the road. On the other hand, not being able to identify (or see!) whatever it is is giving Gretchen the serious creeps really badly.

"...So, uh, listen, don't freak out or anything, and you're probably going to think I'm crazy, buuuut... Magic exists, supernatural creatures exist, and there's something somewhere near us that isn't human and maybe wants to, I don't know, do something unfriendly."

[ Elijah is decidedly not impressed by that. Let's keep this a faulty-logic free zone, please. ]

I wasn't making assumptions. I just thought I'd ask before I jumped to conclusions.

[ mia frowns and looks down at the corpse again. cautiously, she presses two fingers to his cheek and gasps a little ]

He's so cold! Is he sick then?

[ Oh god this is going to be hard to explain, isn't it. Elijah can already tell that much. Best do this carefully. ]

Sort of. Not quite. He's dead.

[bioluminesce]

Oh........ Oh!

[ mia scrambles up to her feet and backs up a few steps, still looking at the body. she knows the word 'dead'. dead was what 'terminated' meant. dead was what was going to happen to her. ]

I- I didn't know that this was what dead looked like.

[Bed sheets be damned, she lead him over to one of the beds, pressing him to lay down as she searched for a pill small enough to apply pressure to the wound.]

Do you live here? Is there a place I should go to get help? Oh here, this should work well to keep you from bleeding to much...

[She grabbed a smaller pillow, making sure to speak to it as she did]

You keep him in one piece now.

[He gives her an appraising glance. She mentioned both 'magic' and 'Texas,' which makes it a distinct possibility...]

MIT, by way of Hard Knocks, actually. [With a name as ridiculous as that, it must be a magic institution.] I don't think I've heard of that one, but it might not be local to my universe.

Well, it was worth a shot.

[He looks back at the book, but it's obvious he isn't reading it anymore. An amusing thought occurs.]

...but the Ivy League spans the multiverse.

Seriously?

[ He just sort of... blurts that out without thinking. How could someone not know...?

On the bright side, at least she seems to know what it means? ]

[ she nods, a bit nervous at his tone. was he mad at her? she's not really sure. ]

Um, yeah. I've never seen a dead anything before. Are they always so cold and um...... [ she pauses, searching her limited vocabulary for an appropriate word. the one she comes up with isn't quite right, but it's as close as she can figure ] .... gone?

That's a pretty accurate description, yeah.

[ He wasn't angry. Just incredulous. But now that he knows that she really is just that sheltered, he's redoubling his efforts to be gentle with her. We'll see how that goes; he doesn't do "gentle" well. ]

[bioluminesce]

[ the corpse is making her pretty uncomfortable, now that she knows what it is. she keeps glancing at it briefly and then looking away. questions are good distractions, she's gonna ask one! ]

.... Why is it here? I mean, er, do you know why he's dead?
