Yet here she was, bright as fire, clear as day, his Katniss, just staring out into the water.
Peeta flung his messenger bag to his side and ran towards her. "Katniss!"
no subject
She turned slowly, afraid for a moment that it was nothing but a trick. That instead of Peeta, it would be a jabberjay, a mutt, something other than the baker's boy that she had clung to for so long.
He was running towards her. First instinct was to turn on her heel and escape, second instinct was to reach for her bow, the arena still firmly fixed in her mind.
But all too suddenly, she found herself diving forward, diving into his arms as the last saving grace she would ever know. "Peeta!" She cried out.

He could stay like this for eternity.
"Katniss," he said, his voice just above a whisper. "I can't believe you're here."
His arms still holding steadily onto hers, Peeta gently let go of their embrace, giving the air just enough space between their bodies for his own eyes to search hers. He had so many questions.

"I didn't think...I didn't expect to see you here. Wherever here is...they told me we aren't in Panem..."
no subject
"I'm here." He slid one of his hands down her arm, and intertwined his fingers with hers.
"We're not in Panem anymore. No one here has even heard of it." A beat. "We were brought here by something they call 'the Grasp.' According to them, it's currently broken and can't bring us home." In other words, they'd been kidnapped.

My name is Katniss Everdeen. I was the Mockingjay, but killed President Coin. I lived in District 12, but District 12 isn't here any longer. I'm somewhere else. Somewhere that doesn't have districts or Panem or Haymitch or Gale.
She rubbed her head lightly, taking a breath. "Why are we brought here? They said something about a prince?"
no subject
"Prince Tristan. The official story is that we've been brought here to be his mate. We're called 'candidates,' and he hasn't selected any of the candidates who have been brought here, for a long time now."
no subject
It made her think of Finnick. Of what Snow made him do. "I won't." She vowed. "I won't be given to this prince. Not by anyone."
no subject
"Something is different." Peeta looked out across the ocean, then back at Katniss. "The Nysgods, they aren't gamemakers. They ... they aren't using us for amusement."
At least not that he could see.
"I've heard from other candidates that the Prince doesn't want a mate. That he's being forced into this as much as we are."
no subject
"Well, that's a relief." It was hard to know what to say to this, to any of it. It was so surreal, but also so familiar. It was though the last few years of her life never happened. That they were facing yet another arena.
"No one else from Panem is here?" She asked.
