[He laughs.]

It's hard to gamble though when we're given everything we could possibly want.

[She smirked and sunk a ball, as though to prove a point.]

They can never give us everything we possibly want. This is all just a nice window dressing.

[She bends again, lining and taking her shot, which missed.]

And they will take as much as they give.

Is that what that was? Well, then I'm being terribly ungrateful aren't I?

And yeah, I was just meaning material-wise. There's a lot they can't give us...

[He trails off as he focuses on her ass as she bends over. She was hot. He misses that last thing she says.]

Terribly so, yes.

Even material wise. I had to hunt for a few days before I found black paint. They said they didn't know and advised me to go looking.

[He's lucky she didn't notice. She steps back and tilts her head.]

What'd you say your name was again?

Huh, that's odd. People told me when I arrived they would give you anything. You're a painter?

[He gives her a mischievous smile.]

I didn't. And neither did you. I was wondering how long we were going to keep that up.

[Devi grinned. She didn't expect to be called on it.]

We held out for a while at least. My name is Devi.

Yeah? What kind of style do you like?

Nice to meet you Devi. So tell me, is it common around here for people to admit what they are if they aren't human or is that sort of kept on the down low?

[Devi laughed.]

There isn't a label that adequately covers everything I paint. So I'm not going to try.

Some of them will admit to it. You'll just have to ask but if I were you, I wouldn't bet on getting a straight answer from a few of them.

[Her eyes narrowed.]

What's a bartender from Ohio know about non-humans?

All us artists have themes and trends in our work. Let's start with the easy question then- do you prefer oils or acrylics or watercolors? Scratch that, I can already tell you aren't a watercolor girl.

Hm. [He was going to leave it at that. He grins at her question though.]

Bete Noire had all kinds of crazy beings there. There were vampires, aliens, werewolves, you name it we had it. I had an alien and a vampire as roommates and was dating a half Time Lord. It opened my eyes quite a bit.

It depends on what I'm doing. I usually stick to acrylic for basic things though.

Ah, good to know that the universe equally fucks people across dimension travel. We had... interesting people too.


You said all us artists. What's your schtick?

Do you have anything you particularly like to paint?

[He snickers at that.]

Yes. Doesn't seem like anyone gets a free pass. What was the place you were at before like?

I am a tattoo artist by profession and a sketch artist. I do paint sometimes, but not very often.

Landscapes, portraits and half naked space women.

[Words that were lined with apathy, the bare hint of mischief in her eyes.]

Insane. It was an island of stable reality in a chaos storm. It was a main road. Called Twisted Street. We had a little bit of everything. Robots, Saiyans, angels and dragons. Shadow puppets. Regular people too. I feel like I'm telling you about a Nam flashback...

[She frowned a little then.]

'Course I had all of my skill set there.

Naked space women, huh? I like the sound of that.

What's a Saiyan? Shadow puppets, what are they like? Heh, well when you survive crazy shit it usually does.

What kind of skills?

I bet.

[Since he's asked less then simple questions, she eyed him carefully, hedging her best bet for what she did and didn't want public knowledge. She doesn't know him and doesn't trust him, however nice he seems to be.]

I'm a fighter. When I came here, I was stripped of the experience and understanding of some of my techniques. Can't say that I really blame 'em. Saiyans are aliens. A powerful warrior race of the their universe. Shadow puppets are a little harder to explain. I don't know who's aware of magic and who isn't.

The place you were made you forget your fighting skills? [That sounded crazy, though he believed her fully. After Bete Noire, he would believe a whole lot of things he wouldn't have before.]

Well there was quite a bit of magic in Bete Noire. One of my close friends there was a wizard. He had a wand and everything. What do these Saiyans look like?

No, this place did. Othela. And I didn't lose my skills, I just lost access to techniques.

[Someone was a little pouty about the fact that she'd been hard set back on her power scale. Her lips pursed at the mention of wizard and wand.]

Wizards are pretty fuckin' cool. Saiyan's look like us, mostly. They've got monkey tails though and their hair isn't so much hair as it is... fur. They're a lot more aggressive and violent then humans.

[That... worried him. Was he limited on his magic too? He could barely concentrate on her talk about the Saiyans as he was now anxious to get away and assess his power.]

Heh, monkey tails. That's uh... unique.

[He looked anxious, something she took in with a bit of amusement. Oh well, everyone adjusted differently. She had thought she transitioned just fine before it took her for a short hop from the crazy train.

Instead of pushing it, she arches an eyebrow and goes back to the pool table. The Temple was sink or swim. Maybe Bete Noire taught the kid how to swim.]

[You learn to survive, especially after you've died once. He had been kicked around a lot in Bete Noire, but so far he was still getting back up. He seems to snap out of it though.]

So what do people do around here all day?

Go insane with boredom? [She shrugs.] Since the temple rooms shift, no one really explores the same thing twice. It doesn't bother me that much, I keep busy, but other people are starting to beat their head into the walls I think.

Huh, well exploring does sound like fun. What sort of rooms have you discovered?

If I spent the time to list even half of them off, it'd take a while. Ball pit rooms, rooms full of rain, a beach, any kind of training room except the one that I need and there are so many flower gardens and courtyards.

I'm still looking for a forest room.
