"Nah," Garmay said offering him a toothy grin. "Just takin' advantage of some of them Nysgod's fine hospitality."

She always felt very proud of herself when she knew she'd correctly used a big word, like 'hospitality.'

In her very particular Garmay sort of way, she tilted her head to one side. The lily pad slid off of her head and into the water with a plop and a splash, making her giggle a little with embarrassment.

Oops.

"I ain't seen you 'round here before. What's your name?"

He settled down by the side of the water, long legs folded easily up and spindly limbs surrounded them.

"Merlin." He had many names, but that was the one he was fondest of.

"This is a place I haven't been before." The concept of another universe or another world was almost incidental to him. He had come to accept his role in destiny and magic, following where it lead him.

"Is it warm enough? The water?"

"Considerin' the fact that there ain't no sunlight, it sure is," she replied. She paused, then politely added, "Mister Merlin." Garmay wasn't always too sure when she had to use titles with folks her own age. It was easier with old folks. It was just respectful to say 'mister' or 'mizz' or 'lord' or 'lady.' But she didn't rightly know if he was noble or not.

Well, his clothing was right peasant-like. But that was just by the standards of her world. Best not to assume.

"No." He laughed a little. "Merlin. Only Merlin."

The appearance of age could be deceiving. As could clothing, but in this case, she was not wrong. No drop of noble blood ran through his veins.

"What can I call you?" His head tilted almost to the same angle as hers, an instinctive mimicry, done unintentionally.

Garmay smiled even wider. She kinda liked this fella. He seemed right decent. No airs or nothing. "Most folks call me 'Garmay,'" she informed him, looking very proud. "It's ancient Hylian. Means 'rain on the river.' Although we ain't exactly sure if that's 'rain' like what falls from the sky or 'reign' like what a king does."

She paused. "Or 'rein' like what you put on a horse," she added as an afterthought.

It's a nice name. One he's never heard before, but he likes it.

"I see no reason why it can't mean all of them. That gives your name a lot of meaning then. Three for one word."

And words were powerful things, as he well knew.

Merlin let one hand fall down to the surface of the water, a small tap that sent ripples of waves out.

"I ain't never thought about it like that before," Garmay admitted. And she sort of liked it. She'd never had much that was her own before. But her name she loved. And thinking about there being more to it was kind of a nice thought.

She moved a little closer to the bank, some of the green splashing off of her. "Does your name mean anythin'?" she asked. "I sure do love names with good stories behind 'em."

Aware of the current state of his company's undress, Merlin blushed a little, but he wasn't really as skittish as he used to be. Consorting with faye and fairies and all manner of magical creatures that had no use whatsoever for clothing had adjusted his sense of propriety a good deal.

Still, he does avert his eyes out of politeness and smiles at the shadows in the water.

"Where I come from, a merlin is a kind of bird, a falcon. It also means fortress of the sea." And because of him, it looked like his name would come to mean 'advisor'.
