They had the whole ritual all set up and ready on one edge of the meadow, somewhere out of the way where they could have a touch of privacy. Each of them - Ming, Jansen, Draco, Reinette, and Glinda - all stood around the edges of a circle, a candle in hand; Tara was in the centre about ten feet away from each of the others, a white candle in hand and a crystal at her throat. It could have been a bad plan, using this much magic in relation to the Wyld, but it was worth a shot.
Anyone who passed by the area would likely hear a gentle chanting, careful and practiced:
Per me enim vas. In me sit, in lucem. Silentia voce liquor. Terra Verbis comprehendit.
"Through me is the vessel. Through me is the light. I speak with the voice of the silent. The land's words are my own."
If all went according to plan, it would all make sense. They had a chance at communicating with the Wyld itself. Of course, things never went according to plan in the Wyld. That would just be too convenient.
Despite Tara levitating up into the air, a bright white light shooting from the crystal at her throat to the sky, there was no obvious immediate reaction. Perhaps that would be a good thing to most of the Wyld's current residents; it would be nice to not have to deal with the fallout of something like this again. Even after Tara floated back down to the ground after a minute or two, there seemed to be no obvious effect.
But just because there was no obvious effect didn't mean that there wasn't anything at all.
Within an hour, people began to get sick. Not in some big way, just slightly: itchiness, irritability, hot flashes. It only got worse from there.
